Coming off an overtime victory this past Monday, the Flyers were playing out of their minds with great chemistry in the second period where they collected two goals to tie the score at two. They had great spacing, got shots on goal when needed, and turned out to be successful. Within the first ten minutes in the third period, it was a dog fight with each team pushing and shoving the other and trying to get their lead which resulted a little halfway when the Bruins got a goal to take the lead, 3-2. The Bruins got in to the Flyers late into the third period where they put it down to bed as they beat the Flyers, 4-2 on an empty net goal, where the Flyers only mustered four shots in the third period.
Just 7:09 into the opening period, Patrice Bergeron got it going for the Bruins with a great move that circled Carter Hart and for the first goal of the game to make it 1-0 (assisted by Craig Smith and Brad Marchand).
The Bruins kept their momentum as they got a power play goal by Patrice Bergeron (assisted by Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak), got into an open space put the puck through Flyers goaltender Carter Hart’s wickets, making the score 2-0.
1:33 in the second period, Travis Konecny put Jakub Voracek in a great position where he tipped it in the goal to cut the deficit the 2-1 in favor of the Bruins.
The Flyers got in a great momentum shift after the Konecny goal as Jakub Voracek set up Shayne Gostisbehere with an opening and Ghost ripped a wrist shot that went over Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman’s shoulder to tie it up at two.
Both teams battled it out from the 15 minute mark on with great looks and chances on both sides, but neither team could lock one up to take the lead.
The Bruins took the lead at the 11:39 mark as Brad Marchand tallied a short-handed goal that confused Flyers goaltender Carter Hart and it ended up giving them the 3-2 lead.
Unfortunately, the Bruins got a big opportunity to shut it down as Bergeron got the puck and netted on an empty net for their fourth goal of the night to make it 4-2. Bergeron completed the hat trick for his efforts, and tallied his 900th career NHL point in the process last night.
The Flyers are now 18-15-5 for the season, and are left scratching their heads. They blasted 25 shots on net in the second period, and it leaves Flyers General Manager with a conundrum with the upcoming trade deadline looming on Monday April 12, 2021. The orange and black are now five points back of the last playoff spot to the Bruins.
What should Fletcher do at the trade deadline, well he should approach it with next year in mind. The Bruins still have two games in hand on the Flyers, and there is little time left to make up this type of ground. Is it possible as the Flyers playoff hopes are now on life support to make a run? Sure, but they have not been consistent enough for this writer to think they could such.
“Joel hasn’t been as effective as he was earlier (In the season),” Alain Vigneault said following the game. “Sammy has been through everything,” Ghost said following the game. “He handles the muscle part. It’s a great relationship, he’s hungry.”
