E218 – Tanking Doesn’t Guarantee a Winner

The Florida Panthers are currently in the Stanley Cup finals and leading 2-0 over the Edmonton Oilers and there is a lot to learn from watching both of these teams’ current success. While the Oilers were lucky enough to draft the best player in the league in Connor McDavid, the Florida Panthers, who are currently the favorites to win, built their roster slow over years of iteration until they put the team together that was able to muscle their way to the finals two years in a row. The Oilers, while relying on McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have also slowly improved their squad over the years to help them become a true Stanley Cup contender. This is another year where the tanking crowd should experience a wakeup call that tanking does not guarantee a winner. There is no one way to build a winner, but only an iterative pattern that requires patience and aggression when the time calls for it. It is now the Flyers time to setup their window of aggression that sits just over the horizon of opportunity.

On this episode of Gettin’ Gritty Wit It, Yariv and Vasili go through the process of building a winner and how the draft can be leveraged in all kinds of ways to create a Stanley Cup champion. While the end of the season inches closer, the league prepares for what will most likely be a busy offseason around the NHL and one that should give the Flyers the opportunity to make the right kind of moves they need to prepare for the following seasons. While the team isn’t looking for a get rich quick scheme, they are setting up the foundation for the following season. Like and subscribe for more content from Flyers Nitty Gritty!
