E197 – The Flyers Do Not Have A Talent Problem (Ft. Bill Meltzer)

The Philadelphia Flyers are still one of the hottest teams in the NHL to date. However, there seems to be a mixed bag of opinions on how they go to this point of success. While some people predicted that the team had playoff potential, Flyers Nitty Gritty site included, majority of media assumed that the Flyers would be one of the bottom-end of the teams in the league. From our assessment this was not a wise or educated theory as people seemed to be analyzing the team on a surface level assuming what happened in the past will happen again. However, it’s important to remember that the only reason the Flyers finished with the seventh worst record in the NHL in 2022-23, is that they did so with a roster burdened with a slew of key injuries that saw them icing a team filled with AHL players. Coming into the 2023-24 NHL season, that was not the case. With Sean Couturier making his way back into the lineup after two seasons and Cam Atkinson recovering from his surgery it would be enough to at least pull the team out of the bottom half of the league. Not to mention the additions of young talented players into the lineup and another year of development for current young core that the Flyers ice on a nightly basis. Throw on top of that a coach in, John Tortorella, who knows how to bring out the most in his rosters and you have a recipe for success.

This season there seems to be a constant narrative that the Flyers are having success with a team limited in skill. But we ask the question here, is that even true? The team has a full roster top to bottom. The forwards are four lines deep, that has NHL regulars rotating in and out of the line, a defense of eight NHL caliber defenseman of both young and veteran players, and two of the best goalies in the NHL. We struggle to see how this team is lacking in talent. Sure the team doesn’t have the top player in the league in any position, but they do have players who can play against the top players in the league and they have a team full of them. Similar to the Vegas Golden Knights’ first season in the NHL that saw them reach the stanley cup finals, they did it with depth and relentlessly competitive attitude. Don’t let the fantastic coaching fool you to think that it’s just the coach that got the team here. It takes the team on the ice to execute on what the coach is saying and if they didn’t have the talent to do so, it wouldn’t be happening.
