E210 – Flyers Had A Successful, But Disappointing Season
The Philadelphia Flyers 2023-24 season has officially come to an end. While, the team was in the playoff hunt till the last 3 minutes of the game against the Capitals, ultimately the Detroit Red Wings were able to make it into overtime, before the Flyers game ended and eliminated their chances. Most fans, outside of this podcast thought the Flyers would finish at the bottom of the NHL standings this year and to fall two points shy of the final playoff spot was a big surprise to those who judged the roster too early. We told you on the podcast that they had enough talent and depth to make the playoffs as a wildcard seed and that seemed to be the case for 90% of the season.
A sudden eight game winless drought was the only thing holding them back. And this coming from a team that lost their star goaltender in Carter Hart, traded one of their top defenders in Sean Walker, Missed Rasmus Ristolainen, and had the worst power play in the league. If any of those three elements would have been different the team would have probably made the playoffs, but that’s not how sports works. Things happen as they should and it’s important to manage those disappointments as opportunities. For instance, with the Flyers losing that final game and not making the playoffs, they held onto the 12th pick in the draft, with an opportunity to move up through the lottery draft. Will the hockey gods smile upon the Flyers and move them up after they put together a great season? Time will tell, but they definitely came into play where the Flyers somehow managed to grab Matvei Michkov who is the exact element this team is lacking with the seventh overall pick, who has generational talent potential.
