E193 – Can The Flyers Win A Playoff Round?
The Philadelphia Flyers have a exceeded almost everyone’s expectations. While we have told you that we think the Flyers were going to be in the playoff mix, we did not anticipate the 9th best winning percentage in the entire NHL, just 31 games into the season. We did tell you that the Flyers would do this leading through defense, but we did not anticipate that the penalty kill would be in the argument for best in the league. It’s fair to say at this point that the coaching staff has done an exceptional job making this team a vastly more competitive club from when they took over in 2022-23. However, the question still remains that if the Flyers would make the playoffs this season, how would they fair?
Most people do not expect the Flyers to make any kind of noise in the playoffs and most vocal media members will say that the team would not get past the 2nd round. However, it’s important to look beyond the expectations and look at how the team is performing today. The way this team is playing needs to be brought to attention, because they are playing some of the most stingy aggressive brand of hockey this city has seen in 20 or so years. With breaking records of low scoring games, the team is going to be a problem for any team coming in with confidence. If they are an offensively driven opponent, they should be even more worried as the Flyers will work on attacking a team’s weak points with showing very little of their own. Riding a solid defense oriented roster and the best goalie duo this organization has had in all of their modern history, they are well equipped to upset any team that thinks goal scoring will be their strength. If the Flyers can fix their powerplay to be even partly adequate, they will be prepared to be one of the most dangerous teams in the NHL.
