22-year-old defenseman Ty Murchison will play in his first NHL game tonight against the San Jose Sharks.

Murchison was recalled from the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms on December 6 due to an injury to Cam York and has been with the team since.Murchison, a 2021 fifth-round pick (158th overall), has impressed with his physical, aggressive style in the AHL this season (4 points, +9 rating, 30 PIM in 21 games).

“My heart was pounding out of my chest,” Murchison said of his initial recall. “When I called my parents, it was an extremely emotional time. I could barely get the words out to tell my parents. I was telling my family, I thought about this every single day of my life.”

He’ll wear No. 96, “He’s a culture guy,” Flyers’ Head Coach Rick Tocchet said of Murchison. “On day one (Training Camp) he was impressive in practice, really pissing guys off. He’s a guy that deserves to come up and get a shot, that’s what we’re trying to build around here, guys that are competitive.”
