Trevor Zegras, the flashy 24-year-old center traded to the Flyers from the Anaheim Ducks in June 2025, has been the heartbeat of their early-season offense. Despite a frustrating defensive lapse in last night’s overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators, his overall production remains unmatched on the team—leading with 16 points (4 goals, 12 assists) through 15 games.

Zegras is on pace for a career-best season, contributing to 42.8% of the Flyers’ 35 goals scored so far, and the team is 8-3-2 in games where he records a point.

The OT Blunder: “Gives Up Goal”

In the dying seconds of regulation against Ottawa on November 8, 2025, Zegras was caught in a poor line change during a critical moment. With the Flyers trailing 2-1 and desperately pushing for the equalizer, Zegras hesitated and waved indecisively for a change but failed to hustle to the bench.

This left Philadelphia short-handed, allowing the Senators to break out on a 3-on-2 rush. Ottawa’s Tim Stützle capitalized with a wrist shot past goalie Samuel Ersson, sealing a 3-2 Senators win in overtime just 1:02 into the extra frame.

Head coach Rick Tocchet didn’t mince words post-game, emphasizing accountability: “He’s got to come to the bench hard. He was kinda waving that he wanted to come off, but he wasn’t. He wasn’t decisive.” It’s a rare blemish for Zegras, who’s been praised for buying into Tocchet’s structured system after criticism in Anaheim for being more “highlight-reel” than “win-focused.”

Zegras just keeps collecting points even in defeat—snagging an assist on Jamie Drysdale’s third-period tying goal to force OT.

Leading the Charge Offensively

Despite the OT gaffe, Zegras’ fingerprints were all over the Flyers’ comeback bid. His assist on Drysdale’s goal (a sharp pass from the half-wall) highlighted his elite vision, and he’s been a wizard on the Power Play, notching points on eight of Philadelphia’s nine man-advantage goals this year.

Zegras’ “resurrection” in Philly is real:

After a broken ankle and inconsistent play limited him to 13 points in 24 games last season with Anaheim, he’s thriving under Tocchet’s guidance.

  • A three-point night (2G, 1A) in a 4-3 shootout win over the Islanders on October 28, where he scored the decider.
  • Two goals in a 4-1 rout of the Predators on October 30, pushing his total to 12 points in 10 games at that point.
  • Clutch assists in a 5-4 shootout thriller against Montreal on November 5, including the game-winner.

The Flyers (7-5-3) sit in the Eastern Conference wild-card hunt, and Zegras’ addition has juiced their shootout record to 3-0—those extra points keeping them afloat. As restricted free agency looms after this season, whispers of an extension are growing; Philly’s General Manager Danny Brière might not wait for a bigger sample size.Zegras’ blend of skill and swagger is injecting life into a young Flyers squad, even if last night’s mistake stings. If he tightens up the details, he could be the catalyst for a surprise playoff push.

  1. First of all, the score was tied at 2 not 2-1. Secondly, it was in overtime not in regulation. You need to be better. That whole paragraph doesn’t make sense.
