This afternoon’s Orange and Black Friday matinee game at the Farg had everything a Flyers Fan could want. A Flyers win putting them above hockey 500 (11-10-3), a fantastic goaltending display in both nets, and a bunch of disappointed Rangers fans.

The Flyers came out with a vengeance this afternoon outshooting the Rangers in the 1st period 15-4.

Bobby Brink broke the ice 3:14 into the contest. Tyson Foerster blocked a shot in the Flyers zone and then with pure determination did all the hard work to push the puck up along the boards and into the New York zone. With Adam Fox all over him Forester sent a backhanded pass to Brink who was flying up the slot outpacing two Rangers in hot pursuit. Brink took the pass on the backhand switched to the forehand and beat Igor Shesterkin through the five hole.

Just 70 seconds later Travis Konecny scored his 12th goal of the season to make it 2-0 at 4:24 into the 1st period. Rasmus Ristolainen moved the puck from behind the Flyers net. He hit captain Sean Couturier with a pass at center ice. Coots dished the puck off to Konecny at the Rangers blueline. TK used his speed to blow past Jacob Trouba and put the puck between Shesterkin’s legs.

With the assists Couturier and Ristolainen both extended current point streaks to four games.

Travis Konecny

Flyers winger Travis Konecny is doing something you do not often see in Philadelphia sports. He has taken no time to recover from getting his big contract during the off season this year. For some reason across all Philly’s major sports teams it can take longer to bounce back from getting a big contract than it does to get over a major injury.

Konecny has been a major force for the Flyers over the past two seasons coming into this year. He has always been a solid and tenacious team player, but over the last few seasons he has really stepped up his game. Danny Briere began working personally with Konecny even before Briere was named GM. This tutelage coincided with Konecny’s sudden growth offensively.

Konecny leads his team with 29 points, 13 goals, 16 assists in 24 games played so far this season.

Way back on October 25th 2022 it was very early on in John Tortorella’s tenure behind the Flyers bench. During a humiliating loss to the lowly San Jose Sharks the Flyers lost a forward when James van Riemsdyk broke his hand. Tortorella ended up benching both Kevin Hayes and Travis Konecny for the entire 3rd period. At the following practice things were a little tense to say the least. On the ice that day in Voorhees I remember Hayes looking disconnected. Konecny looked totally determined and he has never looked back.

Vincent Trocheck scored the Rangers only goal of the game from the slot through traffic 10:20 into the 2nd period. From that point on both Ivan Fedotov and Igor Shesterkin put on a fine display of goaltending at both ends of the ice.

With just 28 seconds left Konecny scored his 13th goal of the season into the open net to cap the final score at 3-1. Travis Sanheim who is also having a strong year picked up his 10th assist of the season on the final goal.

Extra Credit: The Rangers were called for the only penalty of the entire match 6:20 into the 3rd period. Garnet Hathaway tied Brink and Konecny for most shots on goal with four. Flyers outshot the Rangers 35-23.
