Tony DeAngelo was supposed to be shipped back to the Carolina Hurricanes a few weeks ago, but there was a holdup in the deal. It turns out the NHL blocked the deal from coming to fruition due to a rule that most (Including myself) did not know in the CBA. Exactly what was the holdup? Pierre LeBrun explains the holdup well from a tweet from Dan Silver:

DeAngelo was supposed to be shipped back to Carolina for a low end prospect, and that deal should become complete today July 8, exactly one from when DeAngelo was traded to the Flyers per Carolina’s General Manager Don Waddell. Waddell confirmed this on Saturday July 1, 2023 that the Tony DeAngelo deal will remain in place with the Flyers.

The Deal

The Flyers will retain 50% of DeAngelo’s salary making his cap hit $2.5 million for the season. This is a great deal for the Hurricanes on paper, as they will be receiving a 37-40 point defenseman for peanuts.

Since the Flyers are supposed to eat money, the Hurricanes should throw in at least a fifth round pick for compensation of said retained money. Daniel Briere is a smart businessman, and that was made quite evident with the Ivan Provorov deal. Obviously, things were pretty bad in Philly for DeAngelo to possibly be shipped out for nothing, but fair is fair. The Hurricanes should attach at least a fifth round pick for DeAngelo’s services.

In the end, the Flyers have decided they want to move on from Tony DeAngelo, regardless of what it takes. They would like this player off their roster and out of their locker room. Briere did not trade for him in the first place, so this isn’t on him.
