The Philadelphia Flyers are back in action and up against a talented Edmonton Oilers team. With Connor McDavid coming off that goal to lead Team Canada to victory, the Flyers were sure they’d have their hands full. However, that wasn’t the case. The Flyers would pull off a huge 6-3 win thanks to huge games by Owen Tippett and Matvei Michkov. The Flyers improve to on the season.

Michkov gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead at the 2:07 mark of the first period. His shot went wide off the boards and came out the other side. He collected his own rebound and put a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner. Scott Laughton and Egor Zamula collected assists.

John Klingberg tied the game up at one at the 7:06 mark of the first period. Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson made the initial save on Ty Emberg but allowed a huge rebound. That rebound made its way to Klingberg who put a wrist shot past the right skate of Ersson. Emberson and Connor Brown tallied assists.

The Oilers took a 2-1 lead at the 9:31 mark of the second period courtesy of Leon Draisaitl. Matt Savoie made a nice pass to him from behind the net and he put a backhander over the glove of Ersson. Savoie and Klingberg were given assists.

Tippett tied the game up at two at the 1:45 mark of the second period off the rush. He won a race to the puck and put a backhander over the blocker of Skinner. No assists were given.

Sean Couturier gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead at the 7:13 mark of the second period. This is his 200th goal in his career. Michkov made a beautiful cross-ice pass to him and he put a wrist shot off of Skinner’s glove and into the net. Michkov received the lonely assist.

Mattias Ekholm tied the game up at three at the 8:34 mark of the second period. Draisaitl found Ekholm in front of the net and he put a wrist shot over the blocker of Ersson. Draisaitl was given the only assist.

Tippett scored his second goal of the game at the 12:26 mark of the second period to give the Flyers a 4-3 lead. Couturier stripped the puck away from an Oiler and passed it to Michkov. Michkov then made a great pass to Tippett who then put a wrist shot past the right pad of Skinner. Michkov and Couturier collected assists.

The Flyers got the game’s first power play at the 14:20 mark of the second period as Klingberg was called for high-sticking. They capitalized on this opportunity at the 15:37 mark courtesy of Andrei Kuzmenko. He redirected Travis Konency’s shot from the blue line past Skinner. This gave the Flyers a 5-3 lead. Konecny and Rasmus Ristolainen tallied assists.

The Flyers got their second power play at the 4:15 mark of the third period as Brett Kulak was called for high-sticking. They didn’t capitalize on this one but spent the majority of the time in the offensive zone and had a few good chances in tight.

The Oilers got their first power play at the 13:34 mark of the third period as Noah Cates was called for hooking. The Flyers had a 2-on-0 scoring chance while shorthanded and Ersson had to make a huge save on Draisaitl.

Skinner was pulled with 3:54 left in the third period in favor of the extra attacker. It didn’t work, however, as the Oilers couldn’t get any more pucks past Ersson. Instead, Ristolainen gave the Flyers a 6-3 lead at the 17:01 mark to put the game away. Couturier made a pass to him and he sent it down the ice on one hop. Couturier received the only assist.

The Flyers went one-for-two on the power play and managed to kill off the Oilers lonely-man advantage.

Ersson was decent in his first game back after playing a game for Team Sweden. He saved 15 of 18 shots, giving him a .833 save percentage.
