The Flyers took on the Boston Bruins in the second pre-season game of the year. The Flyers ended up losing 4-2, but there were some positive outcomes to takeaway, and also some very questionable moves. Let’s dive into it.

Joel Farabee scores big

Despite the loss, the Flyers leading goal scorer from last season Joel Farabee lights the lamp with two goals, both coming from the powerplay. Coming off of a brand new six-year extension, the young Farabee is showing pmnce again why the Flyers signed him to a new six -year contract extension. Netting two goals in the pre-season, the first one assisted by “JVR” in the first period-the second coming off of a “tape to tape” pass from Cam York, Farabee delivered a one timer to score two goals. Great game by Joel, and he certainly is making his way to the top once again.

Goalie Galore

The Flyers have opened camp with a handful of goaltenders. Some have played well and some have not. Samuel Ersson, the 21-year-old who was drafted in 2018 has continued to impress me this past Tuesday. Playing game 1 and playing well, it left me to start to question who should be the #2 here. Whoever it may be, Ersson deserves to be recognized from his effort against the New York Islanders. Tonight we saw goalies Martin Jones and Felix Sandström. Jones struggled, as Felix played well by stopping 12 out of 13 shots faced in just one period of play. Lot’s of goalies are getting chances, but I would personally take Felix over Jones right now.

Bruins elite showing off?

This may come off as a surprise to some, but teams from the state of Massachusetts have a certain way of doing things. Some bad, and some really really bad. Pre-season is a time where players are looking to make roster spots, cuts are made, and bonds are built. Clearly not for the Boston Bruins in game 2 against the Flyers. The Flyers have shifted players by groups to see who would play what game, rookies and maybe even junior players. The Bruins on the other hand were ready to win the Stanley cup as they sent out their full potential season roster to play against a bunch of kids. This showed me one thing, the Boston Bruins have lost all confidence in their team, even with a good lineup- they needed to have all hands on deck to maybe mesh a little more. Seems unfortunate for a team that has been together a longtime, except when Tuukka Rask had abandoned his team during covid playoffs. Host of the Flyers Alley podcast and creator of the Old city Sports network Jesse Bell and I chatted about this last night around 8:55pm and he says this, “This is the most classless act I ever seen the Boston Bruins or any NHL team do, when you throw your top NHL players out in a pre-season game against a bunch of prospects”. Teams can do what they want, but this didn’t sit well with a lot of people.
