Tyson Foerster
Tyson Foerster has played well, contrary to popular belief, minus the goal scoring but overall his game has been solid. Foerster is really turned in to good two-way player, “The strength of his game was missing, goal scoring, but he’s done everything else strong. That’s why he stayed in the lineup. He has one of the most heaviest sticks on the team and probably won more battles than any person in that locker room,” Flyers’ Head Coach John Tortorella said last night. For his efforts, Foerster that is a big Power Play goal late in the third period, which eventually turned in to a game tying goal that sent the game into overtime and the shootout.
Foerster can snipe it with the best of them, so hopefully this helps his confidence in terms of shooting the puck. He has been very critical of his game over the course of the past few weeks, in terms of shooting more. One thing I love about Forester, he can board battle with the best of them. Tortorella is right, every time the puck is secured along the boards, somehow Foerster coming to wave at the park more often than not.
Cam York
York has really settled in here as of late, and it’s great to see him taking the next step in terms of his development. Is he that guy on the back end? No, at least not yet, but he has strung along some good games here as of late. York has also done much better on the Power Play, while quarterbacking it at times, mainly with the way he’s able to cycle the puck. People forget he’s still young, he’s only 22-years-old, York will not be perfect every night.
What I love about York right now are his gaps. His gap control is impeccable, and that should be noted. York has evolved into a solid defenseman for the Flyers, and he continues to prove this on a nightly basis. I like the way he uses his stick to break up plays, any meter conscious effort of that against the Penguins last night.
Samuel Ersson
Ersson is doing what a backup goaltender is supposed to do, win games without the starter in net. At one point last night, Ersson did not give up a goal in his last 86 minutes played. Ersson was fantastic against the penguins, even with allowing three goals. He finished the night with 32 saves on 35 shots faced which was good for a .914 Save Percentage.
It’s great to see the Flyers excel in the shootout, and that’s exactly how Ersson has won his last two starts.
Scott Laughton and Sean Couturier
Both Laughton and Couturier are great veteran leaders. Couturier continue to work his way back from the past few seasons being injury riddled, while Laughton is trying to find a consistency that he’s had for the past few seasons.
Laughton had a big short-handed goal last night, while Couturier had a big shootout goal, the lone goal in the shootout. Both have been very noticeable the past few games, while making smart plays at both ends of the ice. Couturier in particular has exceeded my expectations this early in the season and it should come as no surprise, he works his tail off.
The Flyers need both of these players to have any type of success this season.
