Maksim Sushko believed he had a good training Camp, so much so he is ready to make his NHL debut tonight as he becomes the 14th player from Belarus to play in the NHL, “Lots of people follow hockey back in Belarus,” Sushko said. “Lots of people texted me yesterday and said congrats, get your chance and just play your best game. It’s a dream.”

Sushko is a 2017 fourth-round draft pick, and former Flyers’ General Manager Ron Hextall just exceled in drafting in the mid rounds of the draft.

The young 22-year-old from Belarus was pretty solid in his final season for a renown hockey program in the OHL, the Owen Sound Attack. A program that former Flyer Wayne Simmonds once played for. For the 2018-19 season, he registered 18 goals, and 33 assists for a total of 51 points in 62 games. Talk about one heck of a prospect. He is a right-winger that possesses that scoring touch the Flyers could so desperately use in the future, and one that has a wicked wrist shot to boot, “Always welcoming, they give some advice and even joke for a bit,” Sushko said Wednesday following practice, “It’s always nice when you come to pretty much a new team and everybody’s friendly with you, everybody wants to talk with you and everybody wants to help you.”

The former Dinamo-Raubichi product appeared to be calm, cool and collected last year for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He just had a goal scoring touch as he became more comfortable at the professional level of hockey. Sushko finished the year with 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points total in 53 games played. Not too shabby in his first season of pro hockey.

Unknown to most Flyers fans, Sushko is very talkative, but he loves his home country. He keeps people on edge but Sushko works his magic on the ice too. Sushko told me back in 2019 that he loved wearing his country’s colors.

The young winger has speed, size , and the way he carries the puck could be of real use for the Flyers. He is relentless in puck pursuit, and Sushko really thrives on the Power Play. Sushko possesses a heavy shot, and he is always in the right spot to pot a goal. His money maker is shooting the puck into the top right corner of the net “Where momma hides the cookies.”

Sushko hopes to build off last season as he looks to impress in his NHL debut. He’s just too talented, and Sushko’s size and speed has set him apart from other prospects.
