The NHL and NHLPA continue to work hard and diligently about the framework of what the new NHL 2020-21 season will look like. Both sides continue to discuss rules/protocols for the season due to the ever changing/fast moving coronavirus (Expanded rosters possibly, training camps, testing, the schedule, the playoffs, re-alignment, pretty much the same rules/protocols that were established this past Summer). The good news is both sides agreed that the economic framework of the newly negotiated CBA won’t be changed.
The NHL asked the players to consider increasing deferred payments and caps on escrow at certain points in the agreement, thus a stalemate ensued between the owners and the players. With no deal in place, and one not in the foreseeable future of such, both sides agreed to move on in order to save the season.

A new target date has been established of January 13 to start the season, with non-playoff teams reporting a week earlier with a date of December 28. The season would consist of just 56 games. There is talk of a short-term “Hub City” format just in case due to the coronavirus, but both sides indicate it is not their preference to use such.
Hopefully this can get done by the end of the week, and voted on by the Board of Governors and the players. Again the good news is that both sides have put their financial situations aside for the better good of the game.
