The Lehigh Valley Phantoms, minus Massimo Rizzo, whom had surgery on his appendix, came back to best the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins last night 5-3.
Obviously, the Phantoms arch rivals are still very much a very good hockey team, but the Phantoms got two goals a piece from Alexis Gendron and Oscar Eklind to power them to a crucial victory.
This is a young Phantoms team that sees Ethan Samson playing top four pairing minutes, especially with Emil Andrae being in Philadelphia with a recent recall. Samson is trying to impress Phantoms Head Coach Ian Laperrière with the minutes he receives.
Eetu Mäkiniemi git the start, with Cal Petersen backing him up, mainly due to uncertainty with the Goaltending injuries that are happening with the Flyers at the moment. Petersen is now the go-to guy in Lehigh, with Aleksei Kolosov also being recalled to the Flyers.
Hunter McDonald scored a big assist on Gendron’s goal that tied the game at two, and he has really transformed his game from the year prior. He was one of the last cuts at Flyers training camp, and he has really built off that momentum. McDonald is trying to seize an opportunity to move up the pipeline depth wise defensively for the orange and black.
They will have to continue this momentum this weekend, and they are now 4-3-2-1 with 11 points on the season.
