The Flyers Young D Pairing In Philippe Myers And Travis Sanheim Are Looking Good At Camp Thus Far

The Flyers defenseman pairing of Philippe Myers and Travis Sanheim have been clicking very well throughout training camp, and the lone scrimmage. This pairing isn’t super new to Flyers fans, as they were seen shutting teams down on the blue line back in early 2020. Now, after the break, the two young defensemen are getting it done for the Flyers during scrimmages and practices, “I think we complement each other well on the ice. He’s fun to play with and make some plays,” Myers said after practice on Sunday. 

The two were doing well with each other on the ice since February. This pairing hasn’t always been great, but they’re both young, Myers is 23-years-old entering into his first Stanley Cup Playoffs, and Sanheim is 24-years-old, while entering his second NHL Playoffs. Sanheim has only played four playoff games. 

This pairing is going to be one to look at, though, “He’s big. He can skate. I have full confidence when I’m out there with him,” Myers said. Myers and Sanheim are big pairing size wise. Myers sits at a comfortable 6’6, while Sanheim is 6’4. 

Flyers Assistant Coach Mike Yeo has spoken out on his confidence in the pairing as this training camp has gone on, “I think Sanny has looked outstanding all camp and that was the best Phil Myers has looked today,” Yeo said after Friday’s practice. Myers said it gives him confidence knowing coaches like Yeo have confidence in him. 

Myers and Sanheim have played together previously in the AHL, and this of course won’t be their first time playing together in the NHL, either. However, the playoffs in the NHL are very different, so it will be a whole new setting for this young pairing. Even with that Myers says he will be ready for the playoffs, though,“I think the intensity is going to be as high as it’s ever been for me during a hockey game.”
