After much anticipation, the NHL has just released the official schedule and the season openers for the 2020-21 NHL season.

The Flyers will open their 52nd season in the NHL on Wednesday, January 13 against their rivals in the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Flyers home opener will see the Broad Street bullies home against the Penguins, and Gritty will be the first Flyers fan in attendance in 309 days to watch the Flyers play the Pens. Moreover, the Flyers finally play at home to open the season, and of course it’s the year with no fans to start the season. They will also play eight back-to-back games throughout the course of the season.

Unlike prior years, the Flyers will play all of their divisional opponents eight times, and the Boston Bruins right times due to Covid-19. This years schedule is unlike any other in years past, but like Kevin Hayes says yesterday:

“Playing the same team over and over again, eight times, there’s bound to be bad blood. There’s bound to be some big hits and bit plays. There’s a lot of chance for some bad blood to turn over into the next game.”- Kevin Hayes

This makes traveling easier, to lessen the spread of the Coronavirus

The first of eight games that the Flyers play against the Boston Bruins is January 23rd, which happens to be an away game. Remember Kevin Hayes is from Dorchester so there might be some bragging rights. Moreover, the first game against a new team for the Flyers in their division is Monday January 18th against the Buffalo Sabres. The season concludes on May 8th away against the Washington Capitals.

All games matter this season, and it is imperative to get off to a good early start to the season, per James van Riemsdyk and Kevin Hayes. Both Hayes and can Riemsdyk said such in yesterday’s interviews with the media via Zoom.
