Will the Flyers trade the 13th pick of the draft for an upgrade on defense? If they elect to keep it, will they trade back in the first round to select a player that the Flyers could use on the team right now? These are some valid questions, and there is a player that plays in Sweden that Flyers’ General Manager Chuck Fletcher I’m sure has eyes on.
The player in reference is Simon Robertsson. Robertsson is a good skater that posseses a lethal shot. He can shoot with the best of them, as Robertsson has one heck of a release.
Better yet, Robertsson is a physical player that forechecks well, and he knows how to bang some bodies in the corner. The right-winger for Skellefteå AIK was on fire for Sweden’s J20 league before the cancellation of the season. Yes, he only had two points playing against men in the AHL for Skellefteå AIK (One goal, one assist), but he showed promise nonetheless. His game is reminiscent of a retired player in Glenn Murray or active player André Burakovsky.
Do not make much of the low scoring totals for Robertsson. The SHL is a difficult league and arguably the third or fourth toughest in the world. Robertsson possesses one hell of a shot, and has one of the best releases in the draft.
“Robertsson’s release is among the best in this draft class and his powerful shot can beat goalies from distance. But to become more of a dual-threat, he has been working on his playmaking abilities.” – Jokke Nevalainen (Dobbler Prospects)
Robertsson stands at 6’0, and weighs 190 pounds. He is a good skater, that has speed and can board battle well. This is an underrated part to his game. He can play the power play with his arsenal of a shot. In a normal season Robertsson is a top 15 pick, however, with league’s being shutdown due to Covid and travel restrictions for scouts. This draft is unlike any other, and he could possibly fall late in the first round or possibly into the second round.
This draft will be unpredictable, and it could be filled with guesses. With that being said, if one has seen Robertsson play they know he has a high ceiling due to his shot and skating abilities, coupled with his physical play. For these reasons, Robertsson would look good in an orange and black jersey. The Flyers could use his physicality and skating abilities, but they also need a player that is not afraid to shoot the puck.
I’m all on board with this one. A skilled winger with a strong shot and quick release who plays physical?
I take that all day.
