The Flyers were left embarrassed last night, and rightfully so. They were outplayed, outhustled, outmanned, and well out scored in a big way. This is just unacceptable and the effort was unacceptable as well with players turning the puck over, standing around, and it left the team searching for answers following the game.
“We got truly embarrassed,” Flyers head coach Alain Vigneault said following the massacre. Claude Giroux said, “It was embarrassing to be playing on that ice tonight. The way we played, we didn’t help our goalies at all. We know we’ve got to wake up. Everybody knows that’s not acceptable. There needs to be an answer tomorrow.”
Easier said than done against a very good New York Islanders club that will be without Anders Lee, however, this team is still dangerous nonetheless.
The problem I have is the way they lost, or the fashion they lost the game. Think back to the 2013 season, the Flyers were getting pummeled by the Washington Capitals 7-0. What did the late Ray Emery do, well he went down the ice and pummeled Capitals Goaltender Braden Holtby. That team showed fire and a will, but this 2021 team just sat back and took the beating, minimal hitting, and no fights to energize the team.
The Flyers just looked lost last night, and lifeless. Maybe I’m an old school writer, but I would like to see more fight from this club, show the will, the passion, even when things go south. Hopefully the Flyers can right the ship and become that hockey club most people envisioned before the season began.
