The Flyers did indeed lose last night (December 20, 2025), falling 5-4 in a shootout to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

One right spot was 20-year-old rookie Denver Barkey making his highly anticipated NHL debut after a call-up from the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He impressed immediately, recording two primary assists (his first NHL points) in a 23-second span during the second period, helping flip a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead.
Barkey played with energy, smarts, and poise on a line with Sean Couturier and Owen Tippett, earning praise from teammates and coach Rick Tocchet for his relentless style despite his 5’9 frame.

Unfortunately, the Flyers blew a 4-2 lead late in the third period (including a short-handed goal), failed to score on extended 4-on-3 power plays in overtime, and lost in the shootout. This marked their fifth loss in six games. Here are some visuals from Barkey’s debut and the game:
Barkey’s performance has many excited about his future—he could stick around longer with the Flyers given injuries and his strong showing. Tough result for the team, but a memorable debut for the kid!
