Chuck Fletcher appears to be the master for re-signing RFA’s (Restricted Free Agents). This new three-year deal for the young towering 6’5, 23-year-old Defenceman Philippe Myers is a thing of beauty. He is slated to earn $2.55 million annually for the next three seasons, as he signed a three-year $7.65 million contract earlier today.

For Myers, he made his playoff debut and tallied a beautiful snipe in his first playoff game against the Boston Bruins in the Round-Robin Tournament. Throughout the course of the playoffs he became the first defenseman since Andy Delmore (May 3, 2000) to score an overtime winner. Myers also became the first Flyers player since 2011-12 (Danny Briere) to pot an overtime winner in a playoff game. He skates like the wind, and when he gets caught in his own deep he can catch up to any player. His skating is superb, and he has a keen hockey sense.

Myers was trusted by Head Coach Alain Vigneault to play against top lines, and was trusted in late game situations in the playoffs. His gap control is impeccable, as he continues to take away space from his opponents. This puts more pressure on his opponents, thus forcing them into making uncharacteristic mistakes. It seems to be a common theme, even when he appears to be a rockstar in Philly now.

Flyers Assistant Coach Mike Yeo has spoken out on his confidence in not only Myers, but his defensive partner Travis Sanheim back in training camp after the pause, â€śI think Sanny has looked outstanding all camp and that was the best Phil Myers has looked today.”

Myers was one of the hardest working Flyers all season long in 2019-20. He proved to the coaching staff, and his teammates that he deserves to be in the NHL. This new two-year deal is a thing if beauty, and it’s a match made in heaven for this proud franchise and Myers.

Fletcher on Myers:

“We’re happy to have Phil signed for the next three years. He is a big, mobile right shot defenseman who progressed into a top four role on our blue line last season. We look forward to his continued growth.”

Myers:

“It’s an honor to be a part of the Flyers for the next three years and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Myers. “We have a real good team and I am very excited at what we are going to achieve this year and the years to come. I really do believe in this group, and go all the way with these guys and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
