The Flyers came in to Thursday’s game needing to pull out a victory against a very good, talented New York Islanders team. It was a different story than their previous game against the Boston Bruins when they lost 4-2. The Islanders came out strong in the first period handling their business and went up 2-0. The Flyers were able to secure two goals from Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Jakub Voracek, which tied the game up at two. No one could score in the third period, as both teams both teams battled hard. The game eventually went into a shootout, and the Islanders sealed the victory with a shootout game winning goal by Brock Nelson.
Just 6:10 into the opening period, the Islanders got on board as Brock Nelson zipped one through traffic that made Carter Hart look confused to make it 1-0 Islanders.
A little over a minute later, the Islanders secured another goal as Jordan Eberle tipped one in off a great pass by Leo Komarov to make it 2-0.
With 12 minutes left in the first. Flyers Sam Morin was called for a five-minute boarding and a game misconduct after checking Casey Cizikas that gave the Islanders a five minute power play. The Flyers did a terrific job limiting the shot attempts during the five minute power play for the Islanders.
As the first period was ending, 6:07, the Flyers finally got on board as Nicholas Aube-Kubel ripped a wrist shot that tipped Ilya Sorokin’s stick and some how went into the goal to make it a one goal Islanders lead, 2-1. The goal ended a twenty-two game goalless stretch for Aube-Kubel.
Three minutes In the second period, the Flyers did a great job taking advantage of their opportunity as Travis Konecny passed the puck to Jakub Voracek and Voracek powered it to the left of the goal to tie it up, 2-2.
Neither team secured a goal in the third period and in five minutes of the overtime. It went in to a shootout and it was as intense as no one scored until the fifth round when Islanders Brock Nelson flipped a wicked shot of the right goal post shot to beat Carter Hart to help the Islanders get the win, 3-2. The Flyers were unable to score in the shootout.
Flyers Head Coach Alain Vigneault did not agree with the call of a 5-minute major and a game misconduct of boarding to Samuel Morin. “From our point of view, we thought it deserved two minutes,” Travis Sanheim said following the game.
Sanheim also said he had words for the ref after he was hit head first in the boards in the third period.
Flyers are now 18-15-5 on the season.
