Flyers’ General Manager Chuck Fletcher said the Flyers would endure an “Aggressive Retool” this offseason, and one way of doing that was shoring up the backend. Especially, with the uncertainty surrounding Ryan Ellis. Well, Fletcher wasted no time as he traded for Tony DeAngelo from the Carolina Hurricanes, minutes from the second round commencing.

DeAngelo is a controversial figure to some for stance on politics, and also he was involved in an altercation in the locker room with one of his teammates when he was a member of the New York Rangers. He also inked a new contract with the Flyers as he was signed to a two-year deal, worth $10 million ($5 million AAV).

He is a solid top four pairing defenseman. DeAngelo is excellent with the man advantage, as he tallied 10 goals and 41assists for 51 points in 64 games played this past season. It actually turned out to be his second best statistical season (53 points is his career high in points).

Here is a breakdown of the trade:

Carolina Receives: 2nd rounder in 2024, 3rd rounder in 2023, 4th rounder of 2022

Philadelphia Receives: Tony DeAngelo and a 7th rounder (This year)

“We’re very happy to add Tony to our team and I know he is very excited to join the Flyers,” said Flyers’ General Manager Chuck Fletcher. “We did our due diligence and we strongly believe in Tony and his ability to help our team. He is a right-handed shot who moves the puck extremely well and will drive offense from the back end for us.”

  1. Wut? Was Fletcher brought in just to make sure we never see the playoffs?
