The Flyers signed Forward/Center Rhett Gardner to a two-year, two-way contract back in July, according to Flyers General Manager Danny Briere. He has played solid hockey for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, to include a short-handed goal to his resume and one game winning goal to his Phantoms resume. For his efforts, he has netted three goals and has registered one assist in 21 games played for the Phantoms.
Today 12-19-2023, he has been recalled by the Flyers. Gardner is a Center, and with Sean Couturier ailing this could be one of those precautionary cases just in case Couturier can’t go tonight. The Flyers have not disclosed what Couturier is ailing from, but he did block a massive shot on Saturday night. He appeared to be ailing on the bench, hence Couturier did have a maintenance day yesterday at practice. Moreover, there is no morning skate today, so this proves even more that Gardner could be recalled for precautionary reasons.
To pave the way for Gardner, Olle Lycksell has been loaned back to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Gardner, 27, played well for the Texas Stars in the AHL, as he tallied 40 points (10g, 30a, 71 GP) last season. The 6’3, 210 pound Gardner also had a great plus/minus rating of +26.
How this turns out is anyone’s guess, but I can confirm Gardner has been recalled by the orange and black.
