According to Flyers’ General Manager Danny Briere, the Flyers have bought out the final year of Veteran Cam Atkinson’s contract. This is a big move for the orange and black, and the Flyers will end up eating $2.5 million of dead cap.
The Flyers will have $5.8 million of dead cap in 2024-25 with a combination of retained salary for Kevin Hayes ($3.5 million), and buying out Cam Atkinson (2.3 million).
The Flyers are near the cap threshold for this season, as it currently sits at close to 83 million dollars. Unfortunately, the Flyers will have $7.4 million of dead cap in 2024-25 with a combination of retained salary for Kevin Hayes ($3.5 million), buying out Cam Atkinson ($2.3 million), and buying out Tony DeAngelo ($1.6 million).
We will see how will this works out for the Flyers and Atkinson. Atkinson is a class act, and always has a smile on his face.
“When it comes to someone with the accomplishments and character of Cam, this was an exceptionally tough decision to make. Throughout his time with the Flyers, Cam has displayed an incredible work ethic and level of professionalism that is a true credit to him as a player and person. I’ve witnessed firsthand the amount of effort, dedication, and perseverance he went through during an incredibly tough rehabilitation process in order to come back and be a leader for our team on and off the ice.
I would like to thank Cam for all he has put into raising the standard of our team. Cam will always have a place in the Flyers organization, and we wish all the success for him and his family in the future.” – Flyers’ General Manager Danny Briere
Atkinson said at exit interviews, “When I was out there, I tried my hardest to make some sort of an impact. I have never experienced that. Doing one to three shifts a period, it’s hard. I try to be a good teammate, and control what I can control and I’ll never go down that negative road. I want all my teammates to succeed and do well, and we all want to be difference makers. When your role does change, you find ways to contribute any way you can. Unfortunately, I wasn’t really on the scoresheet.”
Best of luck in the future Cam
