The Flyers looked like they belonged, for one night, yes it was against the Montreal Canadiens, but Flyers fans saw a glimpse of the future last night.
The youth of the Flyers shined against the Habs:
Morgan Frost- 22, 1g
Bobby Brink- 20, 2a
Owen Tippett- 23, 1a
Linus Högberg- 23, 1a
Ronnie Attard- 23, 1a
Noah Cates- 23, 1a
These College rookies are playing well with the likes of Bobby Brink, Noah Cates, and Ronnie Attard (At least for the past few games). Fortunately, it’s not just the college rookies playing well, they seemed to have fueled Morgan Frost who looks a heck of a lot more confident, especially after potting a goal last night.
Brink has made himself look bigger in the NHL, and his skating is not bothersome at all for him. Brink tallied two assists last night for his efforts, proving his worth that much more. He really gets to the greasy areas, and believe it or not makes the Power Play flow so much better. It will be interesting to see how the power play fares next season with him a part of it.
Cates, on the other hand, looks just as billed. He’s physical, not afraid to shy away from contact, creates turnovers, he’s a pest. However, in the same token he skates well, and really has made himself along in the NHL. Yes it’s a small sample size, but the future looks bright with him.
Attard has a lot of skill set, and you can sense that when he touches the ice. The problem is he has been inconsistent, but for the past two games it looks like he’s figured things out. It helps, confidence-wise, when a player scores a goal, which was a laser. Attard accomplished that on Tuesday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs, in a strong play continue against the Canadiens.
Yes I know it’s the Canadiens, but Attard needed this game. While being paired with Ivan Provorov, Attard had effective Gap control, and looked smooth throughout three zones. He was a +4 for his efforts, registered one assist, blocked one shot, and registered three hits in 16:10 of ice time.
Linus Högberg, is a good skater and he made his NHL Debut last night. You made the most of his opportunity, while being paired with arguably the Flyers best defenseman in Travis Sanheim. Högberg logged 17:25 of ice time, blocked three shots, until it is first NHL point with an assist.
Högberg was once seen as a solid puck moving defenseman, but his development has stalled in lehigh. It’s great to see him confident and poised in just his first NHL game. Hopefully, this left-handed defenseman continues his success.
It may be a lost Flyers season, but it’s not for these young prospects. They are trying to flourish and have been given an opportunity to do such. This is a golden moment for them, and each and every one of them are making the most of it.
