Things are looking horrible for the Flyers at the moment, but it’s part of the rebuild process. They just don’t have enough talent this time of year to win games, and their 1-5-1 homestand proves that.
The Flyers slim playoff hopes are dwindling big time, and they did not score a Power Play goal in the homestand. They were an abysmal 0-17 with the man advantage on the seven game homestand. More over, the orange and black scored just 12 goals, while allowing 30 goals on the homestand.
It’s that bad, that Flyers’ Head Coach John Tortorella will use a Goaltending tandem moving forward, rather than Samuel Ersson being tabbed as the number one netminder, “Sam has been inconsistent,” Tortorella said. “Our Goaltending has been inconsistent. I think with Sam as we move forward, we are hoping it’s going to be a tandem. We are not going to ask Sam to play 55, 60 games, if he’s the guy. I think it’s going to be a tandem. We are still evaluating. Sometimes you watch him play, and you think he’s got it but then he falls off.”
Yes, the Flyers are in the midst of a rebuild, but at what point does the team have to improve the Power Play numbers? Since Associate Coach Rocky Thompson has taken over the man advantage. They have been bottom feeders in the league for the past three seasons, or longer. Imagine if the orange and black had a half decent Power Play unit, they could very well be in a playoff spot right now, or closer to a playoff spot.
This wait and see approach will continue to next season, where the Flyers finally have some money to add in the offseason. Tortorella said yesterday in an interview with Ashlyn Sullivan from NBCsportsphilly that the organization is at the point of the rebuild that they should start adding, rather than subtracting. Whatever the case may be, this is shaping up to be an interesting offseason for the Flyers and are proud faithful.
