“Sell out, Sell out,” the hit song by Reel Big Fish can be used in correlation with the new hockey team in Delaware, called the Delaware Thunder. They took the State of Delaware by storm this past season. The team they call the “Thunder” are part of the Federal Prospects Hockey League. They played their games in the Town of Harrington, Delaware, before the season was shutdown due to the Coronavirus. Approximately 700 people on game day (A sell out crowd) would see this ferocious team in the Thunder play.
The Thunder had many unknowns when the team was first founded last year. First and foremost, how would the community embrace this team? Boy!!! The people of the “First State” come out in full force for their new found hockey team. Selling out the first game, and many other games after that. Owner, President, and General Manager, Charles Pens Sr. believed a packed house on a nightly basis would make it a tough place to play against, and he was right as the Thunder played competitive hockey for the majority of the season. Fight after fight would ensue on most nights, at times it was like Good Ole’ Fashioned pond hockey with the “Broad Street Bullies” on the ice.
Looking ahead to next season, the Thunder have really bolstered their blue line in a big way with an addition of a Philadelphia native in J.C. Moritz, and I’m pretty sure Moritz is a huge Flyers fan. Moritz is a giant, as he stands 6’4″ and weighs 205 pounds. When Owner Charlie Pens Sr. says he wanted to bolster the blue line, he really meant adding a giant.
Moritz played three seasons for Neumann University, and the Thunder are very familiar with former Neumann players. For instance, former Thunder Forward Ryan Marker also played for Neumann University. Moritz is a solid stay at home defenceman. He won’t kill you with his stats, but Moritz can be trusted defensively that’s for sure. Moritz can clear the porch with the best of them, if an opponent enters the slot with Moritz on the ice, trust me they will pay the price.
This is a really solid addition for the Thunder. Moritz played in Slovakia last season for HK Skalica, where he tallied one goal, and two assists in 38 games played. The Thunder needed a player who could clear the porch to give their Goaltenders better chances at seeing the puck. Well folks, Moritz is that guy, and he isn’t afraid to block shots either. After a few games with the Thunder, Moritz is a player that Thunder fans will come to love.
