Flyers’ General Manager Danny Briere is trying to be as aggressive as possible leading up to the draft. Unfortunately, for starters, the proposed deal with the Ottawa Senators is now dead. This does happen from time to time, especially with waiting well over a week to strike a deal.
However, Briere reportedly was very interested in the fourth overall selection currently held by the Columbus Blue Jackets, as he made an aggressive pitch to them, per Pierre LeBrun. It appears that the orange and black were on the market for a Center at the draft.
I’m hearing that deal is not fully dead, and it can reinvigorate itself today. Sometimes this happens in the Sports World, one GM makes an aggressive pitch, the other doesn’t like the pitch, it’s called negotiations for a reason. It’s all part of the negotiation process, but in the end Briere More than likely has a clear idea of what it would take to move up to the fourth overall pick.
Now this does not mean that the Flyers definitely will move in to the fourth slot, but it does offer. Hope for suck. With that being said, if this deal does not come to fruition and the Flyers are stuck with the 12th overall selection, who would be on their radar?
Berkly Catton
The Flyers are in desperate need of a number one Center, and one of the easiest ways to accomplish this is draft one. Berkly Catton would more than fit this bill, as his potential is a top number one Center.
Catton makes difficult plays look easy. He loves to play with pace, which Head Coach John Tortorella would love. He’s not the most physical player, but he doesn’t shy away from physicality. Catton is an excellent penalty killer, and a power play specialist. He really does it all.
One thing the Flyers have craved is offensive creativity, and currently one of the only players on the roster that possesses this is Morgan Frost. Of course, the Flyers Power Play has been lackluster the past few seasons, as well, so Catton would help tremendously in this area.
The Flyers could always use goal scorers. Catton is a goal scorers dream, has he potted 54 goals last season. Moreover, Catton also registered 62 assists for a total of 116 points and 68 games played for the Spokane Chiefs in the WHL. He would instantly become one of the best Two-Way players on the Flyers roster.
His defensive prowess cannot be overlooked. Catton It appears really prides himself on being a solid two-way player, and that is one of the very many reasons. He’s an excellent penalty killer and he thrives in transition the other w
One thing that should be noted is that the San Jose Sharks have moved up to pick number 11, which was three spots higher than the original pick at 14. Why is this important? Well, I believe the Sharks are trying to scoop up one of the promising young defensemen that might be available, thus a Center could be more ready available for the Flyers to pick at 12, a la Catton.
Konsta Helenius
In my previous mock draft, I had the Flyers moving up to pick nine and selecting Sam Dickinson from the London Knights. Not no more, as I get the sense that the Flyers are on the hunt for a Center to pair down the middle with Matvei Michkov.
Helenius would be one heck of an addition to this young Flyers team. If he were selected by the orange and black, then he can head back to Tappara in the Liiga League for the 2024-25 season. There really isn’t a reason to rush his development, as the Flyers are in the midst of a rebuild. He’s a very talented young man, and he will thrive with the Flyers at some point.
He netted 14 goals and registered 22 assists for 36 points in 51 games played for Jukurit last season in the Liiga League. Helenius is a detailed oriented play driver, who is always in the right position to make the right play. He’s tough to move off the puck, and he stays with his check as he transitions up the ice. Helenius has good top end speed, and he wins all the puck battles, at the young age of 18.

Cole Eiserman
If one of the above Centers aren’t available for the Flyers when they make their selection with the 12th overall pick, then look for the Orange and black to take a strong look at a Winger I can score with ease in Cole Eiserman.
Eiserman is a flashy, lightning rod Winger that might catch the eye of Briere with the 12th overall pick of the draft. He’s a natural goal scorer, and some are familiar with one of his brothers Shane Eiserman. Shane was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 2014. Cole Eiserman, on the other hand, stands at 6’0 and weighs 196 pounds, and has all the skills to be a Flyer.
One of his most intriguing intangibles is his unique scoring ability. He’s just has top, high-end scoring abilities. If he were selected by the orange and black his closest comparable would be Jeff Carter, but Eiserman hits the net nine times out of 10. That’s the difference between the two said players. However, the Flyers haven’t had a 40 goal scorer since Jeff Carter way back in 2008-09.
The USNTDP product, Eiserman just wants to show people he belongs in the NHL. He has rounded out his 200-ft game, and that could be quite evident during the second half of the season in 2023-24. Eiserman knows he has to play a 200-ft game in the NHL, he’s a very smart and intelligent player. Eiserman told me he would do whatever the coaching staff asked of him, or play wherever the coaching staff wants, to whomever team that drafts him. He also told me that he doesn’t mind playing for a Team, that’s in the midst of rebuild, like Philadelphia, actually he relishes that.
What does Briere have up his sleeve? What will the Flyers do during the first round of the draft tonight? These are all good questions, All that everyone needs to know is that Briere is indeed trying to make this team better.
