Finally the end is nearing for the Flyers coaching search. The Flyers have indeed named John Tortorella the 23rd Head Coach in Flyers history, and it will become official tomorrow at some point, per a source close to the situation. First to report this was Charlie O’ Connor that I saw. The contract is in the area of $4 million per year, to which it’s a four year deal, per Kevin Weekes.

It ends days of speculation if Tortorella would choose the Flyers, or head to another team. One thing is for certain, per a source close to the situation they informed me that Flyers’ General Manager Chuck Fletcher was fully in charge of this hire, as well as, Assistant General Manager Brent Flahr and I Special Assistant Danny Briere. The Flyers front office appears to be excited about this hire, and are ready to move forward towards the NHL Draft.

From what I’m told, there are no rifts between Fletcher or anyone, to include Flyers CEO Dave Scott. Fletcher was fully in charge of this hire, even though a third party agency selected possible candidates to hire, which is becoming more of the norm for most sports franchises. There were really very little rumors in regards to this particular coaching search, which could be one reason why most franchises are leaning towards this direction.

Tortorella brings experience, and a fiery attitude. This team is in need of a culture change, and Tortorella appears fit for the task. How this will end is anyone’s guess, to include the terms of his contract.
