It’s hard to believe, but it’s that time of year again. The trade deadline commences on March 8, 2024, and this trade deadline in particular should be an interesting one for the Flyers. From now until the trade deadline is complete, rumors will swirl, almost every flyer’s name will be heard in a rumor somehow, but it’s up to the due diligence the Flyers fans to pick and choose what rumor is actually true. With that being said, here are some names that can possibly be on the move, with a little bit of insight of what I’m hearing at the moment.
Scott Laughton
Laughton is one of those guys and that does everything, and does it well. He does it with the out complaining, want him to fill in the top six, no problem coach. In the same token he has had somewhat of a down year in terms of production, but that doesn’t mean he’s still not coveted. There are teams that would like to have the services of Laughton, but Flyers’ General Manager Danny Briere views him as an asset. With that being said, Briere Laughton away for free, he will come with the price tag of a starting point of a first round pick.
With Elias Lindholm off the market, the center depth this season at the trade deadline is not that good, so what that does is raise the price for Laughton. Maybe Briere could squeeze a prospect that isn’t going to flourish in that particular organization, or another late round pick attached to the first round pick price tag.
Teams have called for Laughton, but that just it, it’s calls. There is nothing serious or imminent at the moment and that’s what I’m going to explain. Fielding calls on players just means that, teams are trying to get a feel for what that particular team wants for said player. Calls do not mean something is serious, it could be groundwork laid for a trade in the future, even in the off-season possibly.
In terms of what teams are calling on Laughton? There are two Canadian teams to keep an eye on for this trade deadline and they are the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Edmonton Oilers. Both of these teams will be very active at the trade deadline, with pressures to succeed from both teams.
Sean Walker
Walker will be highly coveted by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars, Edmonton Oilers, possibly the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning could all need help on the blueline, and a veteran to stabilize the backend who is having a strong season could help either of those aforementioned teams.
Yes, Flyers’ General Manager Danny Briere has fielded phone calls for a part of the season about the services of Walker, again keep in mind calling just means teams are seeing what the wants are of the Flyers for the services of Walker. As the trade deadline nears, talks will begin to intensify, again when these reports come out that does not mean a trade is imminent. Staying patient could be the best course of option for a good return on this asset.
Rasmus Ristolainen
It has been reported that some teams have inquired about the services of Ristolainen. This does not mean he WILL indeed be moved, rather teams could be laying groundwork for a trade in the offseason.
Ristolainen’s contract is tricky for a contender that’s pressed against the cap this time of year, however, with the Tampa Bay Lightning losing the services of Mikhail Sergachev for a unknown amount of time, maybe this is the best option. The Lightning have used LTIR (Long-Term Injured Reserve) to their benefit in the past, so this case wouldn’t be any different. =Moreover, the Lightning also do not have a draft pick in 2024 until the third round, so maybe they offer the Flyers prospects and good roster players, NHL ready players in return for Risolainen.
The 29-year-old in Ristolainen has three years left on his deal, with an AAV of $5.1 million per year.
Marc Staal
What more can be said about this 37-year-old rugged blueliner. He will most likely be dealt by the time the trade deadline commences, and any contender would love to have a veteran that provides tutelage for the tough, grueling playoff run. Teams in need of Defensive help are: Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, Edmonton Oilers, Detroit Red Wings, and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Nick Seeler
“We do what we do best, block shots,” Samuel Ersson said last night. Seeler had three blocked shots last night, while Garnet Hathaway lead the team with four. Seeler leads the NHL in blocked shots with 150, and he is an asset in the locker room.
Seeler will re-sign with Philadelphia by the trade deadline for two-years $3-4 million $1.5-$2 million per year), as he continues to be mentioned by Danny Briere and John Tortorella as a player that can see through the rebuild, “Definitely, he’s an important piece,” Flyers’ General Manager Danny Briere said at his mid-season presser a few weeks ago.
Travis Konecny
Konecny should re-sign in July on a long-term extension, thus do not look for him to be traded at the trade deadline by the orange and black. He could very well become the 19th Captain in Flyers history next season, as well. Konecny is a leader on and off the ice.
