Twenty-nine seconds into this tilt Tyson Foerster was cruising into the Ottawa zone when he picked up a Travis Konecny pass from the side boards. Foerster almost casually wristed the puck from the top of the slot beating goaltender Linus Ullmark blocker side. They made it look so easy this could end up being a cake walk, …not so fast.
The Big Picture
The biggest development tonight as far as the grand scheme of things is concerned was the 3rd consecutive start for Dan Vladar in the Flyers net. Vladar’s star is rising between the pipes for the Orange and Black. Dan was credited with the loss on a night that actually saw his overall save percentage going up a few points.
For now at least the newest Flyers netminder seems to have earned the top spot. In his five starts this season his record is 3-2 posting a 1.81 GAA and .932 SV%. He stopped 31 of 33 shots he faced against the Senators tonight. The Flyers were outshot 33-23 in this game.
Old Friends
A half minute into the match and the Flyers had already racked up their only entry on tonight’s score sheet. Foerster from Konecny and Couturier.
At 7:57 of the 1st period former Flyer captain Claude Giroux skated into the Philadelphia zone with the puck. Both defenders drifted towards Grioux who hit a wide open Michael Amadio with a pass. Amadio fired a wrist shot from the circle cleanly beating Dan Vladar glove side to tie the game at one.
Just 3:05 into the 2nd period Vladar stopped former Flyer Olle Lycksell on a breakaway. The puck remained in the Flyers zone. Lars Eller picked up a rebound and fed a beautiful between the legs back-pass to Lycksell who scored his 1st goal as an Ottawa Senator. This would prove to be the game winning goal. Giroux was on the ice for this one as well.
Momentum seemed to shift a bit at this point as the Senators continued to bombard the Flyers net to no avail. Vladar posted another solid outing in the Flyers net.
Hot Spot
The Flyers ended up with a truncated 4-on-3 powerplay during the final minute of the 2nd period. The shift was skated by Sean Couturier, Matvei Michkov, Travis Konecny, and Jamie Drysdale. This was a golden opportunity that the Flyers were unable to capitalize on.
As time ran out Travis Konecny was burning hot about something. It was not apparent who his anger was directed towards but he was steamed and very vocal about it as his team was headed towards the tunnel for the 2nd intermission.
3rd Period
The first half of the final period was racked with penalties. It was not until mid-period that the two teams finally settled in for some 5-on-5 hockey. By this point the Senators were outshooting the Flyers 32-18.
The Flyers went 0-for-3 on the power-play but their penalty kill kept Ottawa at 0-for-5 with the man advantage. The Flyers kills were defensively effective and offensively dangerous.
The Flyers mounted some valiant efforts as the clock was working against them. This one ended 2-1 in favor of the Ottawa Senators after 60 minutes of regulation. Philly is currently in 7th place in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 3-3-1. Things are just getting started.
