It was a different story from the Flyers compared to last game where they lost in a shootout to the New York Islanders this past Thursday night. The Flyers battled hard as they got a boost from Sean Couturier in third period and beat the Boston Bruins 3-2. They did an amazing job putting pressure on the Bruins all game long, as they played a complete 60 minutes to earn the win.
With 14:22 left in the opening period, the Bruins got on board as Patrice Bergeron (assisted by Smith and Marchand) wristed a shot past Brian Elliott to give them 1-0 lead.
About six minutes later, Flyers Robert Hägg ripped a shot which bounced off of Bruins goalie Jeremey Swayman and Travis Konecny got the tip in to tie the game at one.
With 2:14 left in the first period, the Flyers capitalized on a power play when Travis Konecny hit a snapped a pass to the stick of Shayne Gostisbehere’s who tipped it in for a 2-1 Flyer lead.
Midway through second period, Jake DeBrusk got the Bruins even as he ripped a snap shot that landed in the right side of the net for a 2-2 score (assisted by Craig Smith and Charlie Coyle).
With 12 minutes left in the third period, the Flyers took the lead on a Sean Couturier tip in off a great feed from Joel Farabee that slid slowly in to the net (assisted by Joel Farabee and James van Riemsdyk).
The Flyers defense was stellar rest of the game. The Bruins couldn’t find the net and the Flyers sealed a 3-2 victory.
This was a big win for the Flyers as it pulled them within 4 points of the Bruins in the fight for the last playoff spot. The Flyers are now 19-15-6 on the season and they kept their slim playoff hopes alive.
“G is playing so hard every game, every shift,” Flyers Head Coach Alain Vigneault said following the game. A warrior in Ivan Provorov says after blocking a shot that appeared to hurt him, “There was no way I leaving and not coming back.”
