October 30, 2025, the Dallas Stars acquired forward Samu Tuomaala (often stylized as Samuel Tuomaala) from the Flyers in exchange for defenseman Christian Kyrou. This minor-league swap was announced by both teams earlier today, just days into the 2025-26 NHL season.

  • From Philadelphia’s Perspective: The Flyers receive Christian Kyrou, a 22-year-old right-shot defenseman who has spent most of his career in the AHL with the Texas Stars (Dallas’ affiliate). Kyrou, drafted 180th overall by Dallas in 2021, has recorded four goals and 20 assists in 104 AHL games, showing solid puck-moving ability but limited NHL exposure.
  • From Dallas’ Perspective: The Stars gain Tuomaala, a speedy Finnish winger with NHL upside. Tuomaala was originally selected by Philadelphia in the second round (46th overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft. He’s in the final year of his entry-level contract (3 years, $2,492,499 total; $830,833 cap hit).

Tuomaala will report to the Texas Stars (AHL) immediately following the trade.

Why the Trade Happened

  • Flyers’ Side: Tuomaala had slipped in Philadelphia’s prospect rankings entering 2025-26. Despite strong AHL production (75 points in 120 games with Lehigh Valley Phantoms over three seasons, including an AHL All-Star nod in 2023-24), injuries, illnesses, and organizational depth pushed him down the chart. This season, he had just 0 points in three AHL games. The Flyers, focused on defensive reinforcements in their rebuild, viewed Kyrou as a better fit for their blue-line pipeline.
  • Stars’ Side: Dallas sees Tuomaala as a high-reward addition to their forward depth. His elite speed, wrist shot, and play-driving style (often compared to David Pastrnak) make him an intriguing project. At 22, he’s young enough to develop into a middle-six NHL contributor.

In the end, Tuomaala has slipped further and further in the Flyers Prospect rankings. Dallas believes they can untap Tuomaala’s potential, whereas, the Flyers have received another right shot Defenseman.
