9/11 has become a day of remembrance for all those that unfortunately lost their lives in four separate attacks on this great nation. These attacks struck just about everyone throughout the World. It impacted our daily lives and sports for that matter, and it has become a day Americans and those throughout the world would never forget.
One pre-season game brought unity to the United States, a nation that needed to stay together during these tough times.
“We get paid to play this game because the people want to watch us,” Rangers’ Brian Leetch said following a pre-season game from a quote from the New York Times, ”But they made it clear what they wanted to watch.”
After seeing the Rangers and Flyers play two periods of a pre-season game on September 20, 2021. It become clear what the fans really wanted to watch was President Bush’s address to the nation.
The president’s national address on the terrorist attacks was shown on the big video screen during the second intermission. However, it was turned off as the third period was about to begin, with the game tied at two. When that happened fans began to boo, however, the First Union Center then put the President’s speech back on the big screen. For the next half hour or so, both the players and fans alike watched.
Signs decorated the First Union Center saying “These colors don’t run.” In the end, we are all humans, regardless, of our stature in life. It became evident that both the players and fans were affected heavily by this tragedy, obviously. They came together on a night when most needed some comforting, healing, and assurance.
We will never forget those that unfortunately lost their lives on this horrible day. Today marks 20 years of remembrance of this day in our history. It is a day that will live in infamy, may God continue to Bless America.
