Porter Martone (Flyers rookie forward) has quickly picked up the nickname “Moose” from teammate Trevor Zegras. Zegras referred to him as “a moose” in a recent interview/comment, praising his mature play for a young player (he’s 19), physical style, and Power Play contributions.

“He’s a moose. For a young kid, he plays a very mature game. I’ve had a lot of fun playing with him,” Flyers’ Forward Trevor Zegras said in a post game presser, following the game against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.

The nickname “Moose” may have been formed, as it seems to stem from his big, powerful build and playing style as a power forward. It appears the nickname is catching on fast in the locker room and fanbase right after his early NHL games and call-up.

Martone (the 19-year-old Flyers rookie, aka Moose) has been playing extremely well in his very short NHL career so far.

  • Games Played: 5
  • Goals: 1
  • Assists: 3
  • Points: 4
  • Plus/Minus: +3
  • TOI/G: ~16:39–16:54 (with solid Power Play time)

He made his NHL debut on March 31, 2026, and has already made a big impact during the Flyers’ late-season playoff push.

  • He leads the NHL in shots on goal in his first few games (e.g., 5 vs. Washington, a game-high 9 vs. Detroit).
  • On April 5 vs. Boston, he scored his first NHL goal — a Power Play overtime winner on a 5-on-3 — giving the Flyers a huge 2-1 victory that helped push them into a playoff spot. He also had an assist in that game (setting up the first goal with a slick feed).
  • Advanced stats show him spending a lot of time in the offensive zone (high percentile among forwards) and generating quality chances, including mid-range shots.

Martone looks for a 19-year-old straight out of college (he dominated at Michigan State with 50 points in 35 games). Teammates like Trevor Zegras and Tyson Foerster have been hyping him up, and he’s already drawing comparisons to big-impact rookies. Some are even calling his early play “nasty” and saying he’s making things happen every shift with his size, shot, puck skills, and hockey IQ.

The Flyers are in the thick of a Metropolitan Division playoff battle right now (around 3rd place as of the latest updates), and Martone has been a spark for them.Bottom line: For a rookie who just signed his ELC and jumped straight to the NHL with no AHL seasoning, he’s exceeding expectations and looking like a future star. “Moose” is fitting in fast and contributing right away.
