Porter Martone, the Flyers’ sixth-overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, is absolutely on fire early in his freshman season with the No. 1-ranked Michigan State Spartans men’s hockey team. The 19-year-old (born October 26, 2006) from Peterborough, Ontario, transitioned from a dominant OHL career—where he captained the Brampton Steelheads to 98 points (37 goals, 61 assists) in 57 games last season—to the NCAA, and he’s wasting no time making an impact.

His blend of size (6’3, 205 pounds), skill, and power-forward style has him leading the Spartans’ offense and drawing Hobey Baker Award buzz just 11 games played.
Martone’s November 2025 has been electric, especially in Michigan State’s undefeated Big Ten run. Over the weekend sweep of Notre Dame (November 15-16), he exploded for three goals—including game-winners both nights—earning him Big Ten Third Star of the Week honors alongside Spartans goalie Trey Augustine. That performance pushed his season totals to 7 goals and 12 points in nine games, with a ridiculous +11 plus-minus rating that highlights his two-way dominance.

Fast-forward to last night (November 22) at Munn Ice Arena against Wisconsin: Martone was at it again in a heated Big Ten matchup. He notched two points in the first period alone—an assist on Danny Russell’s opener (making it 1-0 Spartans) and a power-play snipe of his own (2-0 lead, assisted by Anthony Romani and Shane Vansaghi). Later, he buried his second goal of the night to pull Michigan State within one after Wisconsin rallied. Through two periods, the game’s tied 3-3, but Martone already scored three points.
This comes on the heels of teammate Shane Vansaghi (another Flyers prospect) assisting on one of his tallies earlier.
His early-season pace?
A projected 1.33 points per game, with elite even-strength play that’s drawing comparisons to top freshmen like Boston University’s Macklin Celebrini (projected +46 plus-minus over a full season at Martone’s clip). Scouts note his evolution into a “multi-faceted scorer,” using his vision and shot to manipulate defenses.
If Michigan State keeps rolling (they’re 8-0-1 overall, 4-0-0 in Big Ten), Martone could be a Frozen Four staple. Flyers fans: Keep an eye—he might sign and bolt for Philly by spring 2026.
