Episode 134 – When The Process Matches The Effort & The Talent Level
The Flyers have hit their first three game regulation losing streak of the season. Not much about this season has been predictable, but it should be noted that we’ve mentioned on this podcast over and over that this would be a process of many ups and downs. Now we are watching that in action and like all volatile situations, it’s an uncomfortable feeling. The Flyers recently lost games to the Columbus Blue Jackets (5-2), the Ottawa Senators (4-1), and the Dallas Stars (5-2). On the surface these look like crushing losses where the team was outplayed and deserved to lose handedly. However, watching the games that is not the impression you would get, as the team played a flawed game, but a game that was capable of walking away with two points. These are the types of games that teams who are in the process of improving tend to lose.
Never once during the losing streak did it ever feel like the team quit on the coach, on the fanbase, or on each other. The Flyers have enough talent to compete with most teams in the NHL, but are currently not built to win a Stanley Cup. With key injuries to Sean Couturier, Cam Atkinson, and James van Riemsdyk, that would be a crushing blow to most NHL teams, like the Flyers, who are not built to withstand that kind of talent loss. However, they are built to be resilient. As we roll into the rest of the NHL season, it is important to note while the team lacks the depth in play drivers and in goal scorers that it did in the past, but they do have a high level of effort and preparation that makes for a successful team. The key element that no one ever seems to mention, is separate from both talent and effort is the overall process of a team. And process is taught, its learned, it’s improved through practice. The process is what limits mistakes, capitalizes on opportunities, and wins those inches on the ice that mathematically can be inexplicable. The process takes time and as the team moves through the season, it will be challenged. But good process improves with challenges. John Tortorella teams have proved to do it in the past, time will tell if the Flyers can do it with this core.
On this episode of Gettin Gritty Wit It, Yariv and Vasili go through the Flyers recent three game losing streak that has people concerned the team is regressing back to their old habits. Is there enough here to rebound from these recent losses quickly and who will lead that charge?
