E113 – The Flyers Must Value Their Own Assets

Trade rumors are swirling as the Flyers approach the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. With John Tortorella now named head coach of the Flyers, it seems like the team can finally move forward with their offseason game plan. The catalyst for a successful offseason will be the NHL Entry Draft starting Thursday, July 7th. This year, the Flyers will be picking much higher than normal with the 5th overall pick. Will they go with a dynamic play-driving forward or will they be tempted to go with one of the big defenseman available at the top of the rankings? The team has several options available at their draft position that are impressive, however this is a year the team has margin for error, as they cannot show any signs of incompetence. If the Flyers are going to change their fate and the city’s heart, the draft is the first step to moving the needle.

However, bad news has started early. With the recent medical update that Joel Farabee will miss 3-4 months after going through surgery this offseason, the Flyers are already starting off with concerns. Sure, he should be back early next season, but this is not something this team could afford to hear. Chuck Fletcher just can’t catch a break, as the team only adds more questions to the equation going into next season without even trying. That doesn’t included the looming uncertainty over Ryan Ellis future, as his ability to play hangs over the teams’ head waiting to bash them again. With a press conference on June 29th, fans can only hope to hear good news. With all of the bad news of late, it’s important for Chuck Fletcher to set the standard moving forward and start making moves where the fans can walk away feeling like winners. Slowly but surely, it is possible to turn this around.
