E132 – The Flyers Ebbs & Flow Of Getting Better

This early Philadelphia Flyers season has been a rollercoaster of expectations, with a dash of subversion. Where the Flyers have shown that they are clearly a more disciplined and determined hockey team, they have also shown the inability to stay on top of their opposition for long stretches without breakdowns. Like, head coach, John Tortorella has been preaching since he arrived in Philadelphia, this would be a long process and that it would take significant time for real change to take place. With 5 wins 3 losses and 2 overtime losses, the Flyers have actually started off better than most people anticipated. However, with three 3 in a row it is normal to feel like things are trending in the wrong direction, even if two of the three losses were in overtime. It is the trauma of the past two season where most of fans are wired to assume the inevitable crash is on its way. And of course the thought of we’ve seen this before has come up in the public discourse as the Flyers started off strong last season. However, this year it is different, it feels different, and while there has been some losing, it’s not in the same manner.

With a vastly depleted lineup and a slew of new members in the locker room, the Flyers look like a more organized, resilient, and aggressive, than the team of the recent past. In the early season there has been several players shinning in heroic moments, three players have stuck out the most to me. Travis Konecny is becoming the scoring winger everyone hoped was still there, Ivan Provorov has been the Flyers most consistent player every night, and Carter Hart looks to be hitting new heights, as he steps back into the spotlight. These three players are key to representing where the Flyers are heading and how they will get there. These player’s consistency will be key as the team ebbs and flow’s their way into building a new era of Flyers hockey. The ups and down’s of winning and losing can be part of the process of improvement, lets just hope it keeps moving in the right direction.
