E140 – How Long Would It Take To Rebuild The Flyers? (Ft. Jamey Baskow)

Things are finally starting to clear up as the season progresses and the Flyers destiny seems a little clearer than it did to start the 2022-23 NHL season. Even with the slew of injuries and uncertainty, it’s becoming harder to deny that no matter what Management is saying, the team needs time to get to place where the roster will be ready to compete for the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Flyers have been trying hard, but they can only get so far in their current structure. The fanbase has not been as ruthless or angry this season as the previous couple before it, because the effort is there. It’s never been a secret that in Philadelphia, effort wins the heart of the city. The city is used to it’s share of disappointment, but it will never tolerate a mediocre drive to win. However, the fanbase has been pushed as far as they can go, clinging to a hope of a playoff glory. It’s not time for a fire sale, but it is time for honesty. John Tortorella has already been leading the charge in that department, now it’s time for the Flyers’ management to catch up.

Recently Coach Torts came out publicly and stated that the Flyers are in a rebuilding phase of the franchise, and until then only soft terms like “aggressive retooling” were used. It’s time for Fletcher to catch up to the coaching staff and put his actions where his money is. If the Flyers want to turn this around, there is no better time to do it in a year devastated by long term injuries and slew of movable contracts. While not all of the trades would be big impact, it’s important to show that the Flyers know where they are going and they have a plan in place to turn this around. Moving on from players like JVR during a strong season would be a good start to say publicly, “Hey were building something here and we know what we need to do it”. Fletcher should not wait to be reactive to the market, but to set it early as the team who knows where they are going and how to get there. Combine that effort with one of the strongest NHL draft classes of the modern era, the season is full of opportunity.

On this episode of Gettin Gritty Wit It, Yariv and Vasili welcome back, the back-bone of Flyers Nitty Gritty, Jamey Baskow. Jamey is on the forefront of all Flyers related news and is usually one of the first people to report on anything important in the Flyers web-o-sphere. Check out the latest as the three of us discuss where the Flyers currently are and how Chuck Fletcher can work with his talent to try to keep his job, which could be hanging on by a thread if he does not have a plan.
