The Philadelphia Flyers are officially cold once again. After a strong streak when Mike Yeo took over the team took another step back after losing a slew of important players to COVID protocol. Combine that with the key injuries to Brassard, Ellis, and Couturier and the team was very short on talent to compete. Losing 5 games in a row is doing the organization no favors providing a vote of confidence from the fanbase. While there is plenty of time to turn the season around, the team just does not seem poised to do that this season. With future Flyers’ Hall of Famer and captain, Claude Giroux, unsigned and rumored to leave town it seems like there is no real fight left in the season to turn it around. It’s sad to say that so early, but you can’t blame people for looking to ship players out of town. Barring a miracle it doesn’t look good.
With the Flyers lack of success and trade deadline projection to move on from veterans, it is the right time to bring up the upcoming 2021-22 NHL Entry Draft. If the Flyers move on from Giroux, they should have plenty of picks to make an impact at the draft. This season is a good year to be bad as the 2022 draft looks like a very strong one. There will be plenty of opportunity to find an immediate impact player. While the Flyers still have a lot of young talent in the system, they lack a true elite prospect at the lower levels and you have to figure they’ll be looking to fulfill that void, no matter who’s coaching or running the team next season.
On this episode of Gettin Gritty Wit It, Vasili and I welcome back friend of the show and founder of The Draft Analyst, Steve Kournianos. Steve works tirelessly every season to provide a top notch scouting report on 200+ draft eligible players, while providing Mock Drafts leading up to the Entry Draft. Check out this latest episode as we go through the Flyers offseason hiatus.
