The Flyers roster is just about set, but it looks like there has been one surprising cut. Star prospect Morgan Frost has not made the cut. While he had several strong shifts this preseason, overall, he was not consistent enough at both ends of the ice to win the coaches confidence. It’s important to note that Frost missed almost the entire 2019-20 season with an injury and it is going to take some time for him to get back on track and prepared for an NHL season. This could be the coaching staff sending him a message that he has to take his game up another level before he can make the squad. It now looks like Jackson Cates has won the 13th forward spot on the NHL squad. This opportunity is open because Tanner Laczynski and Wade Allison have been sidelined with long term injuries. Both Laczynski and Allison were poised to make the NHL, but with Cates being of a similar age and physical readiness, he was the most natural fit. However, do not be surprised Morgan Frost gets a call up early in the year.

With the lineup ready for opening night the team will head into their final pre-season game with what will most likely be the opening night lineup. It will be interesting to see who will take the second line center role until Kevin Hayes returns from injury, but don’t be surprised if Claude Giroux plays with Oskar Lindblom and Cam Atkinson, a line that is both offensively gifted and defensively responsible. This team is now ready to show they can leave 2019-20 in the past, regardless of what kids made it out of camp.
