E136 – The Flyers Can’t Win Walking Wounded

Well it seems that the Flyers organization finally must pay a check it’s been unwilling to cash. After asking for patience as the team works to bring this historic organization back into relevancy. However, now with the injuries mounting to an unprecedented level, the horses are jus not there to win the race. Before the season even began the Flyers could not stay healthy, as they were immediately counting out defenseman Ryan Ellis, locker room leader and goal scorer Cam Atkinson, and leader of the team and best player Sean Couturier. Those three names alone would be enough to reduce an NHL team’s expectations of making the playoffs. Add the other consistently mounting injuries and you have yourself a team that’s incurred its third 10 game winless streak in the past two seasons. This is not something this city is used to or expecting after the promise of an “aggressive retool” mentioned by Chuck Fletcher. Regardless of the narrative being pushed around by anyone, it’s clear that injuries are the story of the season and that’s saying a lot to a team overloaded by injuries over the past three years.

With one of the strongest and deepest NHL drafts in the years, coming up this summer, it might just be the hockey gods trying to write the ship and take things out of management’s hands. However, they still have an opportunity to get the most out of this season and turn things around for the organization. It’s not necessarily time to make moves, but it is time to take a long look in the mirror and get ready to make some aggressive decisions to push the team out of the mediocrity spiral. The biggest question right now is if general manager Chuck Fletcher will still be at the helm of that journey.

On this episode of Gettin Gritty Wit It, Yariv and Vasili go through the Flyers current 10 game winless streak and how the team has found themselves in this position. Where will this team find itself in a few months as the winds of change are looming? Only the Flyers staff knows right now, but it is fun to speculate.
