The Philadelphia Flyers boast a decent record to start the season. However, it’s been difficult for the team to win more than two games in a row early on. Having said that, they have yet to lose back-to-back games as well. It’s been an up and down ride, but the highs have been high and there have not been many lows. Claude Giroux is leading the team in goals and points in the early seasons and continues to prove why he is one of the best Philadelphia Flyers of all time. With his UFA status up in the air, I would imagine the team wants to get a deal done as they pursue a playoff position. Sean Couturier on the other hand has not played poorly, but seems to be off his game a bit over the last handful of games. He is capable of getting back on track at any point during the upcoming stretch, but with Kevin Hayes’ recovery still up in the air, it’s even more important that he elevates his game.
The situation with Kevin Hayes is still not clear, Patrick Brown is out week-to-week, and Ryan Ellis will be out an additional 4-6 weeks to recover from his injury. Luckily the team has held the opposition to a minimal amount of goals. The penalty kill has been strong of late and shows no real weaknesses, but the team’s powerplay has lost most of its early season effectiveness. At this point it seems to be more of a systems issue than the personnel available. With Morgan Frost heating up in the minors, there could be additional support coming if Hayes doesn’t find his way back into the lineup again soon.
