The Philadelphia Flyers hold a 2-1 series lead over the 8th ranked Montreal Canadiens. However, from the reactions of some fans, it would seem as if the Flyers were the ones down in the series. After a disastrous game 2, the Flyers righted the ship by not giving up a single goal in 60 minutes of playoff hockey and locked the doors for a 1-0 regulation win. And even though the Flyers have not played their best hockey, they still find themselves up 2-1 in the series. This is usually a sign of the a good team, but if they want to win the cup they’re going to have to clean up their game.
Without much success on-the penalty kill or the powerplay, the Flyers seem to be doing it all at even strength. This is nice in the short term, but will not be sustainable against tougher competition that only give up chances while down a man. Teams beyond the Canadiens will have a better ability to lock down the mistakes and play a boring game. If the Flyers really expect to beat tougher competition, this will be a must. The Flyers go into game 4 with confidence and momentum from a shutout win that saw their team frustrate the Canadiens offensively. With Hart at the helm, the Flyers should be able to continue to suffocate Montreal’s scoring ability and leave them shooting from the outside and looking like outsiders come the end of next week.
