Owen Tippett inked a two-year $3 million contract today to stay with the orange and black. Tippett was very good in tight spaces, in particular around the net.
Tippett was selected 10th overall by the Panthers in 2017. He’s a ginger, a pure goal scorer, and he was starting to find his niche in the AHL with the Charlotte Checkers prior to this trade.
He only tallied 10 goals, and 11 assists in 63 games played last season as a Panther and Flyer, while registering four goals and three assists in 21 games played with the Flyers after he was traded from Florida.
The young 23-year-old in Tippett stands at 6’1 and weighs 207 pounds. He likes to throw his weight around at times, has excellent speed, and really possesses an excellent wrist/snap shot.
His wrist shot was one of the best of his draft class in 2017. Tippett is an excellent skater, with good acceleration. He has good edge work with his skates, which allows him to drive to the front of the net to pot some greasy goals.
This Right-Winger in Tippett likes to create plays. The downside to this is he holds onto the puck too long while plays do not develop, to which the opposition then seizes the puck for a turnover. Tippett likes to possess the puck. The Flyers needed a confident player with the ability to possess the puck, as they get outplayed regularly with time of possession with the puck on a nightly basis this season.
“I’m really excited for this new opportunity to join a team, build with them and get a fresh start,” said Owen Tippett via a Flyers press release after he was traded. “I’m still working on trying to round out my 200-foot game, but overall I think I can bring offense, size and speed to the lineup. I’m really excited to get going and meet everyone.”
Enter Tippett, a player who more than likely, barring injury of course, will play with the Flyers next season. It’s time to get to work, as Chuck Fletcher really likes Tippett:
“We’re very excited to have Owen join our team,” Fletcher said via a Flyers press release after he was traded to Philly. “He is a young forward who already has NHL experience and will bring power, speed and skill to our group. He is someone we expect to fit into our lineup immediately.”
This new deal for Tippett is a make or break deal with the Flyers, and a high valued one for Tippett. This is a fair deal for both sides, now Fletcher can focus on re-signing Wade Allison.
