After a 6-1 victory by the New York Islanders this past Saturday, the Flyers came into the game on Monday, March 22, 2021 needing a win. However, that wasn’t the case as they fell to the Islanders 2-1 in overtime
Flyers goalie Brian Elliott was outstanding in the goal in throughout the course of the game. The Flyers were able to kill off a penalty to Travis Konecny as the first period ended scoreless. The Flyers sustained a ton of pressure on the Isles and managed to out shoot them 12-4 in the first period.
The Flyers and Islanders created scoring chances in the beginning of the second period, but still no one could find twine, until less than 8 minutes left in the period, Flyers Claude Giroux passed the puck to Oskar Lindblom and he tipped it between Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin’s legs for the 1-0 Flyer lead.
With four minutes into the third period, Elliott tried to save the puck with a bunch of players in front of him. The puck however slipped out to the right side of the goal, and the Islanders Oliver Wahlstrom whipped the puck into an open net to tie the game at one.
With less than two minutes left in the third period, the Flyers went on a power play because of a hooking penalty to Islanders Nick Leddy. The Flyers had a good chance to secure a goal by Jakub Voracek, but he couldn’t knock it in for the game winning goal.
The Flyers and Islanders went into overtime knotted at one, and the Islanders got it going in overtime to win the game on a goal by Anthony Beauvillier. Beauvillier took the puck on the right side of offensive zone after a Flyer turnover, went behind the goal, and shoved the puck inside the left post as Elliott was unable to get his skate to the post .
The Islanders won, 2-1. The Flyers fell to 15-11-4, and the Islanders are now 20-9-4 on the season.
“Yeah, I mean we came to play tonight. Right from the beginning, I think we were responsible with the puck,” Head Coach Alain Vigneault said following the game. “We had several good opportunities tonight. Their goaltender was obviously a big part of their win. He made some big saves at the right time. It’s disappointing. But we went in their building, played a real strong game that first game, weren’t as strong the second game. I thought tonight we battled hard, but they were able to obviously get the winning one there at the end.”
Vigneault continued on Sean Couturier, “It’s a typical hip flexor for a hockey player. As far as I understood from both him and Jimmy, he felt fine tonight. Obviously, no one is at 100%, so he’s not at 100%. But we was good to go.”
