Oliver Bonk, a Flyers’ top defensive prospect (drafted 22nd overall in 2023), was indeed called up from the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms recently to join the NHL team’s practices during the Olympic break.

It was a great idea by the Flyers front office to recall Bonk to help fill in while players like Travis Sanheim and Rasmus Ristolainen are away at the Olympics. He participated in practice on February 18 and spoke to the media afterward. When asked about being with the Flyers, Bonk expressed positive feelings:
“It’s cool, it’s where you want to be all the time. It’s nice for sure.” – Oliver Bonk said on February 18th
This aligns closely with the idea of him being happy (or at least excited and appreciative) to be practicing with the big club—it’s a big opportunity for the 21-year-old defenseman to get NHL-level reps and show what he can do.

The call-up brings “New energy” to practices, with assistant coach Todd Reirden highlighting the high spirits and spirited sessions. Bonk has been recovering from an earlier upper-body injury this season and has been progressing well in the AHL (with points in limited games post-injury).
Although, it’s a short-term stint for practice purposes—he’ll probably head back to Lehigh Valley once the Olympians return—but it’s a rewarding step in his development.
