The Flyers are beginning to finalize their opening night roster for the 2025-26 season, and both Matvei Michkov and Nikita Grebenkin are making strong cases for inclusion on the same line, based on their Pre-Season performances.

Matvei Michkov:

The 20-year-old Russian forward, drafted 7th overall in 2023, is a lock for the roster after an impressive 2024-25 rookie season where he led all NHL freshmen with 26 goals and 63 points in 80 games. In the Pre-Season, Michkov has shown chemistry with Trevor Zegras, notably picking up two primary assists in a 4-3 loss to the Boston Bruins on September 27, 2025, including one on Grebenkin’s goal. He’s expected to play on the top line, likely alongside Zegras and either Christian Dvorak or Noah Cates, bringing elite playmaking and scoring to the power play.

Nikita Grebenkin:

The 22-year-old Russian winger, acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Scott Laughton trade in March 2025, has emerged as a frontrunner for a roster spot. Grebenkin, a 2022 fifth-round pick, has impressed with his size (6’2, 209 lbs), physicality, and offensive upside during training camp and preseason games. He scored a tying goal against the Bruins, showcasing his net-front presence and ability to capitalize on Michkov’s playmaking. He’s been paired with Michkov frequently, leveraging their Russian connection and complementary styles. Reports indicate Grebenkin has likely secured a spot, potentially on the fourth line alongside Garnet Hathaway, though he’s also seen time higher in the lineup. His AHL production last season (12 goals, 28 points in 50 games) and physical tools suggest he could be an everyday NHLer.

The Flyers’ roster is down to 28 players (Some players are injured, bringing this number to 24), with 2-3 forward spots open. Grebenkin and Jett Luchanko are leading the race over competitors like Rodrigo Abols and Alex Bump, the latter of whom was cut recently.

With opening night set for October 9, 2025, against the Florida Panthers, both Michkov and Grebenkin are poised to be in the lineup, adding skill and excitement to a rebuilding Flyers team.
